We Don't Have It All Figured Out

If you've been hurt by a church before, we want to be upfront: we understand why you might have a hard time trusting us. The church as an institution has a long history of closing its doors on the very people Jesus spent his time with. We're not here to pretend that didn't happen or that we're somehow exempt from it (in fact, many of our members have experienced church hurt in the past as well).

What we can tell you is this: we are a church that is trying to change the narrative, imperfectly, humbly, and together.

Who Are We at Prince of Peace?

Prince of Peace is a small progressive Lutheran congregation located in Logan, Utah. We're part of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and we're a Reconciling in Christ congregation, which means we explicitly welcome and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community into our doors and lives. Not as a footnote and not as a caveat so we can change you once you’re here, but as a core part of what we believe when Jesus told us to “love others as we love ourselves”. 

But beyond the labels, we're just a community of people with doubts, questions, and complicated histories, trying to follow Jesus together and figure out what that actually looks like on a daily basis in a small college town in Northern Utah.

If You Have Questions, We Do Too.

We believe doubt is not the opposite of faith; it’s actually part of the process of faith.

If you've got questions about God, about the Bible, or about why any of this matters, you're in the right place. If you've been told your questions are dangerous or your identity is incompatible with faith, we want you to know that you're especially welcome here. We're not interested in handing you a list of things you have to believe before you can belong. Belonging comes first and then we work out our faith together.

What Do We Actually Do?

On Sunday mornings, we gather for worship which includes music, scripture reading, a sermon, and communion that is open to everyone. You don’t have to be a Lutheran or a member of our church. You are welcome to the communion table no matter what. 

We also do our best to show up outside of our building on Sunday mornings. Our Porch Pantry is stocked regularly with non-perishable food and toiletry items and is open to anyone in need at any time of the day or night. We also host the Hope Community Garden, a free community garden that’s open to anyone in Cache Valley. We partner with Cache Valley Mutual Aid to help meet needs that our systems too often overlook. This summer, we're also hosting a series of community potlucks centered on the social issues that matter most to our neighbors, because we believe that coming together for a meal and conversation is one of the most powerful ways to have community.

You will also find our members out in the community at city council meetings, at rallies, and at organizing tables, showing up for the issues that matter to them. We don't believe faith stays inside a building. For a lot of us, it's what gets us out the door in the first place.

We don't do any of this because we have the answers. We do it because we think showing up matters, even when (especially when) we're still figuring it out.

An Invitation

You don't have to clean yourself up to walk through our doors. You don't have to have the right vocabulary, the right background, the right amount of certainty, or even wear the right clothes. You can come skeptical and tired and exactly as you are.

What we do believe with absolute certainty is that we need each other. Community matters, especially in times marked by oppression and need. We need you. We believe each person brings something important and unique to the community and each person that walks with us makes us more whole. We are all just keeping each other encouraged and cared for and want you to be a part of that.
